imageDressing The Part

Dress and appearance can make or break your image, especially when you’re interviewing. Let’s stand back and take a good look in the mirror. No really…… Is your work attire questionable? As a rule of thumb… if you have to second guess your attire, then it’s not appropriate. Ladies, starting from top to bottom, keep the following in mind:

- Hair should be neat and clean at all times. Short cropped cuts display professionalism  just the same as longer lengths. As always, longer lengths are considered classy but more professional when worn in an up-do such as a French Twist with wisps along the side. Hair color even when using dyes and rinses should be natural color that flatters and accentuates your skin tone and or eye color.

- The use of jewelry should be classic and timeless; not gaudy and grossly overdone. Generally a strand or two of pearls, a thin silver or gold necklace is sufficient neck adornment to compliment the attire. Rings should be limited to one and compliment the color of necklace (silver ring, silver necklace, etc). Let’s not forget matching ear accessories! Pearl necklace, pearl earrings etc.

- In the past black, charcoal gray and navy blue were a mainstay as far as the scheme was concerned. Those same colors are still fashionably acceptable with the introduction of dark brown; chocolate to be exact! Any one to three-button suit jacket, paired with a crisp, white, collared five to seven button dress shirt is definitely a hit!

If wearing a skirt, the skirt should match the jacket (if possible purchase the suit and jacket together) with the length meeting the tip of your middle finger when your arms are placed at your sides. Anything shorter than that, could possibly give the wrong impression.

In the event you’re more comfortable in slacks or trousers, they should again, match the jacket. The popular look right now for slacks is a long and fluid; straight legged with a 1 ˝ cuff.

- The shoes, the “piece de resistance” are what can make or break the entire look. The shoes must be eye catching and match the suit, given the fact that most interviewers have already sized you up from top to bottom by the time you are about to do the introductory, “pleasure to meet you” hand shake. Make certain that your shoes are first and foremost comfortable. The heel should be no more than two inches high. A two inch heel looks professional and when paired with those slacks is absolutely hot ! However, if your comfort level rests with skirts, nude hosiery with a heel not exceed 1 ˝ inches.

* Open toed shoes for women in the workplace are rarely acceptable, although fashionable in warmer weather. They’re an accident waiting to happen!!!

* Lengthy and awkward colored nails are a fashion faux paux and a definite turnoff in general but definitely displays poor taste.
